6,800 hectares of pines up in flames in France's Gironde

Over 1,000 firefighters try to tame Landiras blaze

11 August, 12:48

(ANSAmed) - BORDEAUX, AUG 11 - The prefecture of Gironde in southwestern France said Thursday that almost 6,800 hectares of pines had gone up in flames after the vast Landiras wildfire resumed burning on Tuesday afternoon.

The prefect's office has stated that almost 1,100 firefighters have beens sent to the area and that "further reinforcements" are expected.

The high temperatures "are expected to continue until Saturday and, combined with very dry air, create a "very serious risk that fires will break out", the statement said.

"Conditions are very difficult; vegetation and the land are especially dry after more than a month of rain," it added.
