(ANSAmed) - TRIPOLI - A liberal politician and minister in the 2011 Libyan National Transition Council, Ali Tarhuni, has been elected head of the Constituent Assembly sworn in on Monday, reports the Libya Herald website. Opposition figure who worked against Muammar Gaddafi's former regime, he returned to Libya after 31 years in exile to take part in the 2011 uprising against the 'Colonel'. Economist and politician, Tarhuni founded the National Centrist Party, part of the liberal National Forces Alliance. The Constituent Assembly was elected on February 20 to draft a Libyan Constitution in 18 months that will be put to a referendum. The body began its work on Monday with a ceremony in Al Bayda, eastern Libya, in the presence of 47 members. Voter registration for the future Libyan parliament will begin on Wednesday and continue through May 15, reported the High National Election Commission (HNEC) on Tuesday. The body, the Chamber of Representatives, will replace the current General National Congress (GNC). The GNC's mandate was to have ended on February 7, 2014, but was extended by a year in December. The move sparked heated debate on the Congress's legitimacy and many protested in the streets to demand elections. The authorities agreed to hold them but no date has been set yet.

Libyans residing abroad will begin registering in the first half of May in 13 nations. Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, The UAE, Qatar, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Great Britain, Turkey, Malaysia and the US. Libyans wanting to stand for election will be able to register their candidature between April 27 and May 8. (ANSAmed).
