(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS NOVEMBER 17 - "What is needed is not only recognition, but the building of a Palestinian state that can live close that of Israel in peace and security", European Union's Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said to the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday.

"We are working and I am personally in contact with Secretary Kerry, President Abbas and the Israeli side, to see which political and diplomatic initiatives can be taken", Mogherini said.

"Our effort will be to understand what the EU can do to get back the political perspective back on track. Which, at the moment, seems not to be there, but we desperately need to have a political perspective for Palestine, but also for Israel and its security", the Foreign Policy chief added.

Palestine recognition is a 'timely goal' and 'possibility', Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Monday in Brussels. "I believe that we will also discuss this, knowing that recognition is a goal in part of the political environment that wants two states, the state Israel in its security and a state for the Palestinian people", Gentiloni said, responding to those who asked him if the European Union was ready to recognize Palestine. Gentiloni added, "It is not a symbolic act, a recognition for political reasons - it is a goal in the strategy of the two states to be made in a timely, appropriate manner".(ANSAmed).
