(ANSAmed) - ROME, MAY 9 - Libyan General Khalifa Haftar,
who commands the armed forces in Cyrenaica and opposes the
government of national unity led by Fayez al Sarraj, should have
a role in the transition, Italian Foreign Minister Paolo
Gentiloni said Monday.
"I think that, recognising the authority of the government
that is backed by the international community, (Haftar) can and
must have a role in the transition," Gentiloni said.
"As always in stabilisation processes following periods of great instability or war the problem concerns creating a single military structure linked to the politically recognised central authority out of a context in which several militias are fighting," he continued.
"This never comes about through dissolution, but through forms of confluence and involvement of the various militias or armed forces in a national army that is recognised by the government," Gentiloni concluded. (ANSAmed).
