Migrants: EU Council adopts revision to visa-free suspension

Suspension in event of increase in migrant readmission refusal

27 February, 19:10

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, FEBRUARY 27 - The European Council on Monday adopted a regulation to facilitate the suspension mechanism on visa-free travel agreements, the Council said in a statement.

"Visa liberalisation brings great advantages to the EU and third countries. At the same time, the EU must be able to respond effectively in cases where the rules are not being respected. The revision of the suspension mechanism adopted today makes it easier to tackle abuse of the system," said Carmelo Abela, Maltese Minister for Home Affairs and National Security (rotating presidency).

The suspension can be activated both on the base of notification by a member state to the EU Commission, as well as by an independent initiative in Brussels.

The possible reasons for a suspension are numerous, and include, among others: a decrease in cooperation on readmission of migrants; a substantial increase in the refusal rate of readmission applications, including for third-country nationals in transit; and a substantial increase in the risk to public policy or the internal security of the member states.

The adopted regulation must now be signed by the European Council and the European Parliament.(ANSAmed).
