EU to use visa policy as leverage for repatriations

Adopted new mechanism in updated visa code

06 June, 18:23

BRUSSELS - The European Union's visa policy will be used to obtain more migrant repatriations, following the Council of the European Union's adoption on Thursday of updated regulations to the visa code.

The new regulations will contribute to improving cooperation with third countries regarding readmission, thanks to the introduction of a new mechanism to use the processing of visa applications as leverage.

As part of this mechanism, the European Commission will periodically evaluate cooperation with third countries regarding readmission.

If a country doesn't cooperate, the Commission will suggest the Council adopt a decision that applies specific restrictive measures in the processing of visa applications, and, as a last resort, in the right to visas.

If, on the other hand, the country cooperates, the Commission can suggest the Council adopt a decision to process visas faster or to allow for longer periods of validity than those of multiple-entry visas.
