'Pillar of the state, left country moving in right direction'

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, JULY 25 - Rachid Ghannouchi, the president of Tunisia's Ennahda Islamist party, said Thursday that President Beji Caid Essebsi's death in the morning was ''a big loss''. He called Essebsi ''a pillar of the state, the Republican regime and its democratization'', noting that his statesmen skills had ''prevented Tunisia from direct clashes between the (secular-modernist) Nidaa Tounes and (Islamist) Ennahdha parties, achieving a convergence of two parallel lines''. Ghannouchi said that Essebsi, who had been his friend since 2011, ''left Tunisia in the hands of the institutions and these institutions are now working to fill the void he left. Tunisia is in good hands because there are these institutions that Essebsi helped form and we have faith in the future.'' ''Essebsi left Tunisia moving in the right direction, that of elections,'' Ghannouchi said, stressing that ''the last action'' of the deceased head of state was to ''sign the presidential decree for the signing of voter convocation''.(ANSAmed).
