Historic visit by Saudi foreign minister to Cyprus

Unprecedented occasion bothers Turkey

    BEIRUT - Saudi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Assaf completed an unprecedented official visit to the Republic of Cyprus, bothering nearby Turkey, which in 1974 took over the northeastern part of the island, said pan-Arab broadcaster Al-Jazeera, which is owned by Qatar.

    Assaf was received in Nicosia by his Cypriot colleague Nicos Christodoulides.

    Last week, a Saudi ambassador was sworn in for the first time in the history of relations between the two countries.

    Saudi Arabia is trying to widen the reach of its political and economic influence in the area.

    The Republic of Cyprus hopes to attract Saudi investments, as well as investments from other countries in the Persian Gulf that are allies of Saudi Arabia.
