(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, MARCH 2 - EU border agency Frontex is
working on rapid intervention at Greece's maritime border, in
the Aegean Sea. The executive director of the EU agency, Fabrice
Leggeri, on Monday agreed on the initiative after Athens on
Sunday night made an official request. While the European agency
and Greek authorities are working in close contact to quickly
finalize an operative plan, Frontex has already increased its
surveillance capacity and is redistributing officials from other
operations to provide immediate assistance.
As soon as the plan will be agreed, Frontex will ask other member states of the EU and Schengen countries to provide border guards within the next five days and equipment in 10. Rapid intervention is used to give immediate assistance to an EU member State under urgent and exceptional pressure at its external border.(ANSAmed).
