(ANSAmed) - NEW YORK, MAY 10 - UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has "expressed deep concern for the constant violence in occupied East Jerusalem, as well as the possible eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in the districts of Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan". In a statement, a spokesperson "urged Israel to cease the demolition and evictions, in line with its obligations according to international humanitarian law". "Israeli authorities - the statement also said - must exercise the utmost moderation and respect the right to freedom of peaceful assembly".

"All leaders have the responsibility of acting against extremists and of pronouncing themselves against acts of violence and instigation", continued the note. Guterres also urged to "maintain and respect the status quo in holy sites", as well as reiterating "his engagement, also through the Quartet for the Middle East, in supporting Palestinians and Israelis in the solution of the conflict based on pertinent resolutions of the United Nations, international law and of bilateral agreements".
