CAIRO - An Egyptian security delegation that met with Israeli officials on Thursday "did not manage to achieve any positive results concerning stopping Israeli attacks" on Gaza and Palestinians in Jerusalem "in exchange for a halt to rocket launching from Gaza and the announcement of a ceasefire, even if only temporary", a source in Cairo close to the talks said Friday.

"Israel has refused all initiatives and mediation" proposed, "both from Egypt and from other countries", the source said, noting that the Israelis are insisting "on a large-scale military operation", after which "talks can be returned to".

"It is clear that Israel wants to achieve specific objectives, attacking Gaza Strip prior to a ceasefire, including the destruction of the military potential of the Palestinian resistance and especially that of Hamas", as well as the elimination "of a certain number of leaders in the movement", the source said, predicting that "the Israeli military operation could last several days".
