(ANSAmed) - PARIS, JUNE 8 - Two people were arrested Tuesday in France's southeastern Drome region after President Emmanuel Macron was slapped while greeting the crowd.

The incident was videotaped by several of those present, posted online, and confirmed by the president's office.

The video online shows Macron - who was on a visit to Tain-l'Hermitage and had just left a hotel school - was moving away from the crowd behind barriers and was about to get into a vehicle to leave.

On seeing people apparently calling out his name, he went up to the barrier and the first man who he grabbed the arm of slapped him with the other hand (right hand against left cheek). The aggressor was immediately arrested, as was another person next to him, by the president's security guards.

The footage then shows the president getting close to the crowd again to speak to those present.

His office stated that Macron then continued with his visit as planned.
