Algeria closes parliamentary election campaign for 12/6 vote

24 mln voters called upon to vote for lower house Saturday

(ANSAmed) - ALGERI, 09 GIU - The campaign for the June 12 parliamentary elections closed officially on Wednesday.

The main unknown aspect of this election will be the turnout, since both the opposition and the Hirak protest movement are against it .

About 24 million voters are eligible to take part in Saturday's election of 407 new representatives at the National People's assembly (the lower house of parliament) for a five-year term.

They will be able to choose between almost 1,500 lists - over half of which are running as "independents" - and over 13,000 candidates.

This is the first time such a high number of independent candidates are running against candidates backed by political parties, which have become largely discredited and considered responsible for the severe political crisis.

These newcomers, with no stated political affiliation, could become a new force with the backing of the powerful, who are seeking legitimacy in a country suffering from a crisis and amid social and economic tensions.

The winners of the last parliamentary elections, in 2017 - the National Liberation Front and the National Democratic Rally, partners in a presidential alliance that supported former, ousted president Abdelaziz Bouteflika - have been discredited.

Pro-government parties and official media continued urging the public to take part in these "elections, crucial for the stability of the country" until the very last minutes of the campaign. (ANSAmed).
