Med5 'constructive on dialogue', EASO to be unblocked

Italy's minister stressed migrant relocation essential for south

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, 09 GIU - The EU countries of the Mediterranean, the so-called Med5 - Italy, Greece, Spain, Cyprus and Malta - have said in a letter to Brussels that a turning point has been reached to unblock talks on the European Asylum Support Office (EASO).

The countries' interior ministers including Italy's Luciana Lamorgese have shown themselves to be "constructive" in the efforts and prepared to "compromise", the letter stated.

For the first time the "package" approach on a new EU Asylum and Migration Pact has been left behind - that of "nothing is agreed until everything is" - which has slowed progress in recent months.

Portugal's interior minister, Eduardo Cabrita, called it a "great success" for the strengthening of EASO.

The progress was made at the EU Home Affairs meeting in Luxembourg on Tuesday - the first in person after 15 months of online meetings - and this could now spark new, positive dynamics ahead of the EU summit June 24-25.

The initiative may also provide momentum for Rome's talks with Berlin and Paris on a temporary redistribution mechanism for migrants arriving on Sicilian coasts, while waiting for the entering into force of the new EU Pact.

With Eurostat figures in hand, Germany and France - irritated by secondary movements of migrants from southern Europe - Eurostat alla mano, tedeschi e francesi, irritati dai movimenti secondari di migranti dall'Europa meridionale, avevanhad noted that Germany, with 102,500 asylum requests in 2020 had received 24.6% of those in the EU, followed by France with 81,800 or 19.6%.

Italy was far behind with its 21,200, or 5.1%.

They had also warned that the situation would be unblocked only if Italy showed a true desire to move forward in a "constructive manner" on the EU Pact.

This seems to have occurred, according to the Med5 letter.
