(ANSAmed) - ISTANBUL, AUGUST 4 - The Turkish foreign
ministry has accused Greece of "violating once again the rights
and freedoms of the Turkish minority in western Thrace". In a
statement issued on Thursday, the ministry slammed as
"unacceptable" a new measure approved by Athens under which
Greek authorities have the right to appoint Islamic religious
leaders (muftis) for the Turkish minority residing in western
Thrace, which includes about 150,000 people. According to
Turkey, the new legislation allegedly violates international law
by ignoring the role of muftis who have already been elected by
the minority. (ANSAmed) (ANSA).
