NAPLES - The 2021 edition of Spain's international tourism fair FITUR will include a new section on health tourism.

The fair will run from May 19 to 23 and will be held both with operators present and online as an attempt to bring about recovery in the sector after the COVID pandemic.

Part will focus on all those coming to the country for specific medical treatment, a sector in which Spain holds fifth place in Europe and tenth in the world, with 140,000 tourists arriving in the country every year for this reason.

Spanish strategists say that there is still a large margin for growth that could raise the country higher in the rankings.

FITUR Health will include meetings with sector specialists beginning with a Spaincares cluster and there will be a day of conferences on may 21.

Spaincares will offer a concept of tourism connected with health in different fields, from physical wellbeing to mental and spiritual health, including activities such as yoga, aroma therapy, meditation, and open-air activities.

FITUR, Spaincares chairman David Medina was quoted as saying on the fair website, is a launchpad for international markets and health tourism should be one of the pillars of the plan for modernization and competitiveness of the tourism sector.

Slated to take part in the session are also representatives for the Spanish National Association of Spas (ANBAL) and the cities of Valencia and Tenerife, who will spotlight their initiatives in the field for the season starting soon.

During the meeting there will be discussion on thermal baths and the benefits of water therapy in parts of the Iberian peninsula and focus on Tenerife as a "health destination", as the island awaits being named a 'European Health Destination'.

Valencia will also be the focus of a panel discussion on "how to be the healthiest city in the world", part of a study that puts the city among the top-ranked for this category.
