SANAA - The first commercial flight in six years took off on Monday morning from the capital of Yemen controlled by rebels, according to AFP journalists on the ground. The airport of Sanaa had been closed to commercial traffic since August 2016.

On April 1, the UN announced a two-month truce in Yemen and the beginning of meetings between the sides at war, which accepted to halt all offensive military operations by air, ground and sea inside the country and beyond its borders.

The Yemeni aircraft - which transported 126 passengers, including patients who need medical care abroad and their relatives - took off shortly after 9 am local time from Sanaa for the capital of Jordan, Amman. The first commercial flight was supposed to take off on April 24 but was postponed to a later date.
