Over 5,400 kilometres of Italian coastal bathing waters have got the top mark of "excellent" in the latest annual survey for 2020 of the National Environment Protection System (SNPA).
This amounted to 95% of the beaches classified, said the survey complied with the help of national environmental agency ISPRA and regional agencies.
Sardinia and Puglia topped the poll with 99.7% of "excellent" bathing beaches.
They were also top for the distance of coastline with such beaches.
