Ex-premier and Forza Italia leader
Silvio Berlusconi has said there is no chance of the incoming
right-coaltion government lurching towards populism.
The next government looks set to be led by Giorgio Meloni as her
right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party was the driving force
of the coalition's victory, picking up 26% of the vote on its
own.
"If I thought there were a risk of a populist turn, the
government would not even take off," Berlusconi, whose FI got a
better-than-expected 8% of the vote, said in an interview in
Tuesday's Corriere della Sera.
"Actually, (if there were) we would not even be allied with the
other two parties in our coalition," he added, referring to FdI
and Matteo Salvini's right-wing League.
