New vaccines against the highly
infectious Omicron variant of the coronavirus are not needed
yet, US President Joe Biden's pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci
said on a video link to a ceremony awarding him an honorary
degree at Rome's La Sapienza University Thursday.
Current booster jabs offer good protection against Omicron and
for the moment specific new vaccines for this variant are not
necessary, said immunologist Fauci.
Fauci, 81, who has advised all US presidents since Ronald
Reagan, was speaking in a lectio magistralis upon the conferment
of an honorary doctorate in Advances in infectious diseases,
microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences.
Fauci added that the booster jab reduced by 80% the risk of
hospitalisations with COVID-19.
