Italian doctors on Tuesday performed
the first living transplant to reconstruct a ligament in Italy.
The operation to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament
(ACL) of the knee, resorting to living donation for the
transplant, was performed for the first time in Italy on a
14-year-old boy, with the donor being his father.
The procedure was carried out in It Pinerolo, near Turin, in an
orthopaedics facility directed by Dr. Sergio Ronco.
With this technique, already used in Australia and Spain, and in
particular in Barcelona, the Pinerolo orthopaedics team is now
finalising a protocol, submitted to the National Transplant
Centre, so that it can be shared with other specialised centres,
and adopted nationwide.
