AC Milan and Inter gained ground on Napoli on Wednesday when the Serie A leaders surrendered a two-goal cushion to draw 2-2 at Sassuolo.
The Naples side looked to be cruising thanks to second-half goals by Fabian Ruiz and Dries Mertens.
But the host stormed back thanks to Gianluca Scamacca and Gian Marco Ferrari and they even had a injury-time winner disallowed by the VAR.
Napoli have 36 points form 15 games, one more than Milan, who thumped Genoa 3-0 away.
Champions Inter are one point further back in third after beating Spezia 2-0 at San Siro.
