Migrants: Serbia-Austria-Hungary to counter illegals

Orban and Nehammer, Serbia plays a crucial role

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, NOV 17 - Serbia, Austria, and Hungary reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen cooperation in the joint fight against illegal immigration. These countries are subjected in different ways to the pressure of migration flows along the Balkans, the main route from Central Asia and the Middle East to Western Europe. At the end of a trilateral summit yesterday in Belgrade, President Aleksandar Vucic of Serbia, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban signed a Memorandum of intent underlining the firm will to renew their efforts in countering illegal immigration.

Speaking at the end of the three-way meeting, the second in that format after the one in Budapest last month, Vucic said that the number of illegal migrants to Serbia has almost doubled this year compared to 2021, with the majority of the refugees from Afghanistan (40 percent), Syria (27 percent), Morocco (12.5 percent), Burundi (7 percent), and Pakistan (2 percent). Serbia, he pointed out, intends to intensify measures further to counter this phenomenon. (ANSA).
