Migrants: EU defers Hungary to Court for asylum procedures

Hungarian requirements for protection 'unlawfully' restrictive

15 July, 15:08
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 15 - The European Commission has decided to refer Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union "for unlawfully restricting access to the asylum procedure" in the EU country, the Commission informed today.

The Commission recalled that, under the Hungarian law, before being able to apply for international protection in Hungary migrants and refugees must make a declaration of intent stating their wish to apply for asylum at a Hungarian Embassy outside the EU, in order to get a special entry permit for that purpose.

"The Commission considers that this requirement is an unlawful restriction to access the asylum procedure," the EU said.
