(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUN 2 - The average youth unemployment rate in the Western Balkans was 35.1% in 2020, more than double than the 16.9% rate registered in the European Union, a study of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) revealed. According to the research, the youth unemployment rate has increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the 4th quarter of 2020. The highest rate was observed in Kosovo (49.1%), the lowest in Albania (26.5%) last year.

The youth employment rate was below 27% in all Western Balkans economies, compared to 31.4% in the EU-27, the RCC noted. The proportion of young people neither in employment nor in education or training, the so called NEET, averaged 23.7% in the Western Balkans,, compared to 11.1% in the EU27.

Part of the problem "can be blamed on the COVID 19 pandemic that stopped job creation, but changing the situation with youth unemployment requires eliminating the cause of the problem, not just dealing with the effects", Majlinda Bregu, Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) said.
