China criticises Slovenian PM over support to Lithuania

Dispute over Taiwan opening a de facto embassy in a EU country

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, SEP 16 - China's Foreign Ministry criticised the current EU president Slovenia on Thursday for a letter that the Slovenian prime minister Janez Jansa wrote urging the European Union to stand with Lithuania against Chinese pressure, Channel News Asia (CNA) reported today.

CNA said the controversy is related to the decision of China to withdraw its ambassador to Lithuania over a dispute about Taiwan, with Beijing unhappy with Lithuania for allowing Taiwan to open a de facto embassy in the country.

"China urges Slovenia and the EU to take a correct and objective stance on Taiwan-related issues and not to use the subject to create new troubles for China-EU relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said. (ANSA).
