Croatia: President, Serbia to decide between EU and Moscow

Milanovic on Orban's support for Serbian EU path

02 July, 16:23
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, 02 LUG - Serbia has to meet all the criteria to join the European Union, and at the same time has to decide whether to stay with the EU or with Moscow, said Croatian President Zoran Milanovic. "I have nothing against Moscow, but Serbia has to decide between Brussels or Moscow, and the current Serbian leadership is not doing it at their best, while we need to be clear about this," said Milanovic, quoted by the media in Belgrade.

Croatia's Social Democratic President has released his statements in the aftermath of an initiative of the ultra-conservative Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whose government has published in the Croatian daily Vecernji list an announcement on the 'Future of the European Union' with seven proposals, one of which is the "importance of Serbia's entry into the EU." This statement has sparked a row in Zagreb. In recent days, Croatian FM Gordan Grlic Radman spoke of Serbia's European prospect, underlining that Belgrade should show substantial progress in key areas, meet all the criteria for membership, and, at the same time, recognize that a genocide was committed in Srebrenica in July 1995."
