(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 29 - The wildfire that raged across
Kras, in Slovenia, for the past two weeks proved extraordinarily
difficult to contain because the area is littered with thousands
of World War I explosive devices that could detonate if exposed
to extreme heat, the Slovenian news agency STA reported. Over
500 devices exploded during the fire, which has since been put
out, but the area remains hazardous, authorities warned.
According to STA, experts estimate that the area of the former
WWI Isonzo Front is littered with about 70 kilos of unexploded
explosive ordnance per square metre. (ANSA).
