Covid: CEE, more than 400,000 deaths since March 2020

Cases down 22.6% week on week, deaths -17.5%

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAY 19 - (by Stefano Giantin) The epidemiological situation in countries in Central- and Eastern Europe is continuing to get better, but the region surpassed the threshold of 400,000 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, the latest epidemiological update of the World Health Organization (WHO) shows.

According to the update, a total of 217187 new COVID-19 cases -22.6% compared to last week) and 8124 new deaths (-17.5% week-on-week) were reported by the countries in the Balkans and in Central- and Eastern Europe to the World Health Organization (WHO) through May 16, bringing the cumulative total deaths to 401158.

According to WHO data, in the past week the countries across Central- and Eastern Europe that reported more new cases were Germany (73105), Ukraine (34354) and Poland (21027).

The countries across the region that reported more new deaths last week were Ukraine (1682), Poland (1652) and Germany (1321).

In Central- and Eastern Europe, the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic were reported in Germany (86096), Poland (71664), Ukraine (48075), Czechia (29901), Romania (29485) and Hungary (29175).

Hungary is the country with the highest ratio between deaths and population since weeks, with 299 cumulative deaths per 100,000 population, compared to 208 in Italy. In the region, a high ratio of deaths in comparison with the population is registered also in Czechia (280), Bosnia (275), North Macedonia (249), Bulgaria and Montenegro (both 248), Slovakia (224) and Slovenia (222).

In Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and in the Western Balkans (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania) 28777 new cases were registered in the past week. In the region there were 86162 total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic (+1692 in a week).

According to official data collected by the portal Our World in Data, updated as of May 16, Hungary (with 76.2 doses administered per 100 people) and Serbia (59.3) are fourth and sixth in Europe respectively for COVID-19 vaccination doses administered per 100 people. (ANSA).
