Barcolana: presented 54th manifesto, by Matteo Thun

Chosen by illycaffé for the Regatta scheduled for Oct. 9

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 05 LUG - TRIESTE, JULY 4 - The poster for the 54th Barcolana, the world's largest Regatta, has been unveiled, created by Matteo Thun, an Italian designer, and architect chosen by illycaffè, who is in charge of the art direction for the Barcolana pinup.

After Michelangelo Pistoletto (2015), Gillo Dorfles (2016), Maurizio Galimberti (2017), Marina Abramović (2018), Olimpia Zagnoli (2019), Lorenzo Mattotti (2020), and Ron Arad (2021), the choice fell on Thon, whose work has reflected the values of the Regatta, the original spirit with which it was conceived in 1969, and which continues to inspire the organizers of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano. The Barcolana is "for me the joy of human endeavor. I wanted to describe the optimism of the Regatta to create a poster that spoke to our human nature and expressed the importance of imprinting our world with the human touch, respect, empathy, and spontaneity. The imprint on the illy cup I designed 30 years ago carries a simple message: let's leave a positive impression in the world," Matteo Thun explained. The CEO of illycaffè, Cristina Scocchia, recalling the "strong common root" that binds the company to the territory just like the Barcolana, underlined that Thun chose "the metaphor of a fingerprint: a stream in which parallel lines flow, sometimes interrupting, forming a design reminiscent of sea currents, capable of conveying positive emotions and celebrating the importance of connections." Mitja Gialuz, president of the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano (Barcola and Grignano Sailing Society) has a similar opinion. "For navigators, currents are independent variables that must be taken into account when charting a course," and "the image also evokes an ear and reminds us of the need for listening." Barcolana is scheduled for Oct. 9, 2022, in Trieste (start at 10:30 a.m.), preceded by events on land and at sea beginning Sept. 30.

Registration for the Regatta has been open since June 29 (www.barcolana.it). Four hundred posters and 4,000 postcards with the same graphic design will leave the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano today, addressed to as many yacht clubs and owners. (ANSA).
