Covid: Romania, emergency, it's curfew again

From Monday, new restrictions, critical situation in the Balkans

24 October, 12:37
(ANSA) - BELGRADE, OCT 24 - It's night curfew again in Romania, grappling with a dramatic new phase of the pandemic that sets daily records regarding infections and deaths.

According to regional media reports, the curfew and new severe restrictive measures, with vaccination pass for most public spaces, will come into effect on Monday. For weeks, Romania has recorded between 15,000 and 20,000 new daily infections, with hundreds of deaths, even up to 500. The health system is collapsing, and intensive care units are saturated, with dozens of patients sent to hospitals abroad, especially in neighboring Hungary. The vaccination campaign is prolonged, with Romania and Bulgaria at the last places in the EU for the percentage of the immunized population, so far around 30%. The pandemic is resuming significantly in other Balkan countries, particularly in Serbia, where the vaccination campaign is slow - only about 53% have obtained the two doses so far. In the last 24 hours, Serbia recorded 6,748 cases and 60 deaths, Croatia 3,585 infections and 25 deaths, Slovenia 2,270 cases, and eight deaths. There has been the highest number of cases in a single day in the last ten months in the latter country. The epidemiological situation also remains critical in Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, all countries with low immunization percentages. (ANSA).
