Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said he was proud of his side and they deserved more after losing 2-0 to Liverpool at San Siro on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie despite dominating the match for long spells.
Inter almost went ahead early on when Hakan Calhanoglu hit the crossbar but they now have a huge challenge to reach the quarter-finals after Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah struck for the visitors in the closing stages.
"It's difficult to comment on that sort of result, but I'm pleased and proud of our team performance," Inzaghi said.
"Unfortunately, we weren't rewarded with the goals that we deserved and when we were on top, we fell behind to a goal from a set-piece.
"It was still a wonderful evening. The San Siro faithful got behind us from start to finish.
"The result is a shame, but this attitude will stand us in good stead for the future.
"Liverpool are one of the best sides in Europe.
"My Inter team went toe-to-toe with them and deserved more.
This performance has to give us confidence because I think it was possibly our best display this season considering the quality of our opposition.
"We have to take confidence from the performance and it can be a starting point for us."
