The government plans to introduce family allowance for children from their birth to the age of 21, Family Minister Elena Bonetti said Thursday.
The amount of the monthly allowance has not been set yet but Bonetti announced plans last month for it to range from 160 euros for the least well off families to 80 euros for the best off.
She said the allowance would be introduced at the start of next year.
"An increase is planned starting with the third child," Bonetti told Italian TV on Thursday.
She also said that the benefit cheque for disabled children would be 30-50% higher.
In the latter case, it would be extended for their lifetime, Bonetti said.
