A high-profile Italian surgeon and
former Palermo hospital department chief has been arrested in a
probe into the Sicilian mafia.
Giuseppe Guttadauro, 73, aka 'the Doctor', has been arrested in
a mafia conspiracy probe in which former Sicily governor Totò
Cuffaro was also investigated.
Guttadauro is suspected of belonging to the Palermo-Roccella
Mafia family and of intervening in the affairrs of the Cosa
Nostra 'mandamento' (branch) of Villabate-Bagheria.
The doctor had high-class clients in Rome.
He allegedly tried to resolve a dispute between wealty society
lady Beatrice Sciarra and Italy's second biggest bank UniCredit
to the tune of 16 million euros.
He is accused of telling heavies to "hand out a beating" to
anyone who may have prevented the transaction, including former
minister Mario Baccini and former member of the Council of
State, Italy's highest administrative court, Eugenio Mole,
police said.
Guttadauro is a former 'primario' at Palermo's Civico Hospital.
