Germany: Laschet attacks, SPD turns to statism

Scholz 'does not answer questions about an alliance with Linke'

30 August, 15:52
(ANSA) - BERLIN, AUG 30 - Armin Laschet (CDU) attacks Olaf Scholz (SPD) again: if the German voters want continuity with Angela Merkel's policy, "they will have to distance themselves from this completely statist SPD policy," he said in a press conference in Berlin after the session of the CDU presidium this morning.

Laschet replied to a reporter who asked him what he would have to change to give an adequate impression to the chancellery, expressing criticism of the SPD vice-chancellor Scholz. He added that being suitable for the chancellery means to say clearly, for example, whether a coalition with the Left party Linke is possible or not. "A clear and simple question, to which there is no answer, and that's not a chancellor's attitude," he underlined.

The CDU leader is under pressure and even at the "Triell," the TV debate between the three chancellor candidates broadcast last night came last in viewers' preferences, according to a poll conducted by Forsa. (ANSA).
