Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on Friday
defended Italy midfielder Sandro Tonali after the FA referred
him for continuing to illegally bet on sport after he arrived
from AC Milan last summer.
The 23-year-old from Lodi is already serving a 10-month Italian
soccer federation betting ban and the FA now says he placed
around 50 bets in the four months before his Italian ban kicked
in, after moving to the Magpies last August.
Howe said Tonali "has suffered a lot and has sought help" for
his gambling addiction.
"The disease continued even after he came to England from Italy,
and he asked for help.
"People should see him like that, instead of throwing stones and
punishing him again".
