The "Duino Castle International Award for poetry and theatre goes to the poem "Nova Zemlja" (New Earth) by young Bosnian poet Rankica Gvozden. The jury chose her verses from about 1,200 compositions from 40 countries and in 20 languages. The silver medal went to "Breath Again and Again in Chaos" by Romanian poet Nicoleta Laura Ucceani; in third place, "Mio Ermetico Eremita." by Italian poet Giziealem Lombardo.
Dedicated in this 20th edition to the theme "You and I," the competition conceived by Gabriella Valera Gruber continues with the support of the Poetry and Solidarity Association.
"From the very young up to the 30-year-olds, in the three sections (poetry, theater, school projects), almost two thousand young people took part in the competition, with about seventy schools involved, especially from Greece and Africa, but also from Latin America and China," said President Ottavio Gruber.
The jury's special mention, ex aequo, went to "Zweisamkeit" (Together) by Nathan Diego Portanova and "Trieste in Bora" by Mark Veznaver from Trieste.
As for the theater, the jury screened 30 texts by authors from Italy and other countries and about 70 school projects from several countries.
All of the podium was Italian: first place went to Sofia Cattaneo's play, "Fiducia", followed by "L'amore ha i Ray-ban" and "I baffi da Messicano" by Michael P. Diez, and "Maremaridada" by Alessia Giovanna Matrisciano.
As for school project awards, class 3A of the Giacomo Bresadola I.C. Trento 5 secondary school took the top step of the podium with its project "Poetic Deposits and Hidden Treasures". The award ceremonies are scheduled in Trieste on March 16 and 17 and included in the Literature and Poetry Festival program.
